Where the road ends and life begins

Gila Cliff Dwelling Entrance
Our first major hike

Find out more about us

You have probably been wondering what we are about, so here is a little information about us.

We have been avid hikers for the past 5 yrs and can't wait to get back on the trail after coming back from a hike.

As recreational hikers, through our years of hiking we have gained a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge of tips and secrets of how to make the best hiking experience possible.

We first started out as many new hikers do. That is with a heavy pack, out of shape and big appetites, and very little knowledge of the proper way to make a successful hike. Although we loved it, we were worn out after a few days. Our first major excursion was trail 161 in the Gila Wilderness in NM. Climbing almost 1500 ft. in 3 miles with 55lbs. on our backs, on a trail rated "difficult", was not a good experience. Along with that we didn't carry enough water and got too close to dehydration for comfort.

Although we live in southwestern MI our favorite area to hike is in the deserts and mountains of AZ and NM. The Gila Wilderness is our favorite spot to go and we plan on moving to the area when we retire.

Through the years we have learned a lot about lightweight backpacking, survival and navigation. Although there is a ton of information on the web about these subjects we are tired of having to go to various websites to get the information that we need to make a safe hike.

Our goal with this site is to provide you with the information that you need to ensure your safety. We have two major projects coming up for this site that you will want to watch for.

The first is a complete survival section that will give you valuable knowledge about wilderness survival. There are a lot of websites that post the old army survival manual as a survival guide. Although this manual has a ton of information in it, it also has a lot of things missing. Our goal is to provide those things and eliminate the things that don't pertain to everyday hikers.

The second project is a complete navigation section that will break things down to where you can understand it. Keep an eye out for it if this is what you are looking for.
