Where the road ends and life begins
Understanding Goretex and Goretex care instruction
Goretex is a thin lightweight Teflon based membrane sandwiched between an outer nylon fabric and a soft inner fabric. It has nine billion microscopic pores per square inch; the pores are smaller than a liquid drop and larger than a molecule vapor making it breathable yet waterproof. Gore-Tex garments are treated with a durable water repellent.
Goretex care instructions
Gore-Tex garments are a specialized item and you will want to treat them with respect by following the Gore-Tex care instructions.
It is recommended that you follow the Gore-Tex cleaning, care, and maintenance instruction tag provided on all of your Gore-Tex products. Each of your Gore-Tex items has specific Gortex care instruction tags usually found on the inside of the garment. Manufacturers of quality Gore-Tex products have taken steps to ensure you are able to get the best for your money. Taking care of your Gore-Tex products will ensure that your items remain dependable and useful for many years to come. To keep your Gore-Tex garment working to its best-expected performance, regular care and maintenance should be carried out. Over time, the durable water repellent will require rejuvenation and need to be re-applied. Using a Fluoropolymer water repellent such as Silicone water repellents are oil based and may clog the breathable pores.
How to wash your Gore-Tex garments
Your Gore-Tex products are machine washable to a temperature of 104° F/40° C. Powder or liquid detergent may be used, I recommend dissolving powder detergents before adding it into the machine. DO NOT use fabric softener. DO NOT use chlorine bleach. It is not recommended that any other products be included in with the wash water to ensure that the breathability of the garment is not affected. A topical water repellency restorative treatment may be applied only when your garment is completely dry. It is important that you rinse your Gore-Tex garment well. Soap residue will inhibit the performance of your Gore-Tex garment. Take care when having your Gore-Tex garment dry-cleaned be sure to insist that your dry cleaner use only clear distilled solvent rinse and spray repellent.
How to dry your Gore-Tex garments
Gore-Tex product may be tumbled dry on a warm setting. In fact, Gore-Tex will benefit from the heat in the drying process by reactivating the durable water repellent treatment of your garments outer fabric. Your Gore-Tex garment may be ironed but do take care, do not place the iron directly onto the garment, a cloth between your iron and the garment is recommended.
