Where the road ends and life begins

Wilderness first aid kit

Your wilderness first aid kit could very well save your life, definitely if you get injured or sick. Although you may carry one on your pack at all times, if you don't have the right first aid kit ingredients then it is absolutely useless. Whether are assembling a first aid kit on your own or if you are purchasing one, you still need to know what goes in one.

Along with your backpacking first aid kit I recommend that you carry a pocket guide such as the “Pocket Wilderness Emergency Handbook”.

Now the first aid kit ingredients that you will need;

    Basic things:
  • A waterproof case
  • A triangular bandage large enough to make a sling (at least 40”)
  • Butterfly bandages to hold cuts closed
  • 2 and 4 inch Ace bandages for sprains
  • 2 and 4 inch rolled gauze
  • 2x2 Gauze pads
  • 4x4 Gauze pads
  • Waterproof bandaids
  • Adhesive tape (white medical tape)
  • Isopropyl alcohol wipes to clean wounds
  • Cotton swabs to clean wounds and eye obstructions
  • Eyewash to clean eyes
  • Heat and Cold packs
  • Medical scissors
  • Tools- Tweezers, Forceps and Safety pins
  • You should have metal cutters in your multi-tool
  • Biodegradable soap
  • Tourniquet
    • Ointments and Medications:
  • 1% Hydrocortisone cream for bug bites
